Friday Food Bag Applications Accepted at Elementary Schools
Posted on 09/01/2016
PASD LOGOPort Angeles, Wash. - The Port Angeles Food Bank, in collaboration with the Port Angeles School District, offers students in need a Friday Food Bag with a no-cost meal for the weekend.

Elementary students will be bringing home 2016-17 applications to apply for the program.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to return the completed application to their student’s school as soon as possible if you’d like to have your child(ren) participate in the program which begins Friday, September 16th.

The idea to provide an extra meal over the weekend, one that is nutritious, easy-to-prepare and non-perishable, has grown since 2012 to meet the needs of Port Angeles students and families.

Stevens Middle School has a version of the Friday Food Bag offered at its school.  Anyone interested in participation should speak directly with Nancy Bowman, Stevens counselor.

Volunteers put together “bags” at the Food Bank and bring them to schools on Friday mornings.  School staff or volunteers distribute “bags” before students leave school Friday afternoons.

“We are thankful to the Port Angeles Food Bank staff and its board of directors for continuing the Friday Food Bag program,” Tina Smith-O’Hara, school district representative for the program, said. “We encourage parents to be thoughtful about their child’s participation to ensure all Food Bank donations are utilized by our participants.”

Jessica Hernandez, executive director of the Food Bank, oversees the program with input from volunteers and school district staff. Donations are solicited throughout the year at the Food Bank location, 402 South Valley Street. Call Hernandez and her staff at 360.452.8568 if you wish to volunteer or make a donation.

The School District and Food Bank do not have the ability to customize diets beyond an allergy or significant dietary restriction.
